India’s tour to West Indies – 2011. Stats from the only T20 match played at Trinidad on June 4th, 2011.
Match Stats:
Scores: India 159/6 in 20 overs, WI 143/5 in 20 overs; India won by 16 runs
- Suresh Raina has now won all three matches as captain for India in T20Is. The previous two came against Zim in 2010
- Also, the first T20I win for India against WI
- Team score of 159 and run-rate of 7.95 are a new record at this ground
- S Badrinath, P Patel and S Dhawan made their T20I debuts
- S Badrinath became 23rd player to get MoM award on T20I debut, 3rd Indian to do so
- This was the 200th T20I, India had also defeated WI in 200th ODI
Pre-match stats:
Team Stats:
- In both their previous T20I encounters, WI came out as winners – by comprehensive margin too – 7 wickets on first occasion and 14 runs in the most recent match.
- Both matches were in ICC T20 championships.
- However, in overall T20Is, India’s W/L ratio is superior – 1.36 to WI’s 0.80.
- In terms of sheer number of wins, among top eight teams in T20I, India and WI are placed 7th and 8th respectively. But both have played the least matches too compared to other 6 teams.
- India have 5 uncapped players in their squad, WI have only one uncapped player in the squad
Ground Stats:
- In two matches played here, highest team total has been 123 @ only 6.83 run-rate.
- WI won’t want to remember their last game here – they couldn’t surpass Zim’s 105 and scored a horrid 79/7 from 20 overs. Not surprisingly, 105 is the lowest defended total in T20I (qual: full 20 over match)
- The only fifty on this ground is by R Sarwan – 59 @ SR of 128.26 ….. and he is not playing tomorrow’s match
- However, WI captain D Sammy enjoys bowling on this pitch – having taken the only 5-wicket haul on this ground

- Lowest total: 132 by Pak against Aus in 1999
- Highest individual score: 149 by Gilchrist against SL in 2007, only five players have hit 100s in finals
- Best bowling: 5/38 by Garner, Gilmour is only other player to take 5-for. Infact only 4 players have taken 4+ wickets

- Lowest defended: 183 by India against WI in 1983
- Garner and Kapil Dev bowled 4 maidens in the 1983 final
- Gilchrist and Ponting have hit 8 sixes each in 2007 and 2003 final
- Sehwag’s 3 sixes in 2003 final is most while chasing – no one else has even 2 sixes in 2inn
India-SL stats in finals:
- India have played 59 finals, winning 22 and losing 32 giving W/L ratio as 0.68
- SL have played 45 finals, winning 25 and losing 19 giving W/L ratio as 1.31

India-SL Batsmen in Tournament Finals
India-SL Bowlers in Tournament Finals
From Jan 2008, Ind-SL have played 33 matches, India winning 18 and SL winning 13
India-SL batsmen in India-SL matches since Jan 2008
Sachin in finals:
- In tournament finals, Sachin has most 50+ scores – 16 and most 100s – 6. All 6 100s resulted in Indian win
- No one else has managed 4 100s in finals, let alone match Sachin’s feat of 4 consecutive 100s in finals
(in his golden run of 1998) - Sachin’s innings-per-100 ie. 38inn/6tons = 6.33 is lowest than anyone else
- Sachin’s 8 MoM awards in finals is highest too, next best being 5 from Aravinda de Silva.
- He has most MOS awards too when his team has reached finals – 8
- Sachin’s batting average in won finals – 103.08 is highest (min 10 matches won). Bevan with 102.4 is the only other player with 100+ avg. Ponting’s average in such matches is 46.29, Gilchrist 47.14, Lara 60.16 (only 6 matches)
- Only Sachin from India has 50+ average in finals (min 500 runs). Next best is Ganguly’s 37.03. (If we don’t impose constraint of runs, likes of Sameer Dighe, Ravindra Jadeja, MSK Prasad have 60+ avg
, all of whom haven’t played more than 2 finals
) - Under MS Dhoni’s captaincy, Sachin has played 3 finals with scores of 117* and 91 against Aus in CB series and 138 against SL in compaq cup. Ofcourse India won all 3 finals.
- MS Dhoni has played 8 finals as captain, winning 4. Which means, out of 5 finals without Sachin in team, only 1 victorious campaign – the Asia cup, incidentally defeating SL
Batsmen with 1000+ runs in Tournament Finals
Batsmen with 500+ runs and 50+ avg in Tournament Finals
Other stats:
- This is the first time two Asian teams are playing WC finals
- Since 1992, atleast one Asian team had made the finals and out of 10 WCs, only thrice did Asian team not reach finals – 1975, 1979 and 1987
- WI, India, Aus, Pak and SL are the five teams to have won WCs in order of winning. India have beaten WI, Aus, Pak – in that order in previous 3 matches and SL is next! (Not my stat, popularly shared in FB, so no idea whose it is)
- MS Dhoni as captain has won all tournaments whenever there was a tie in league stage – 2007 T20 WC, 2010 IPL and CL (again not my stat)
- No WC host has ever won WC final (1996 WC, SL played in Pak and hence not counted as host)
- This is the 5th time in finals that both team captains are WK. All of them by Dhoni-Sangakkara and hence this will be first such unique happening in WC finals
. In the four previous finals, 2 each won and lost by Dhoni and Sanga - India would want to take advantage of this fact: India have won 28 matches and lost only 11 against SL in matches played in India against 67 wins and 50 losses overall.

- Sachin got his 95th ODI fifty, 62nd MoM award and 9th in WCs extending his record in all 3 stats. Surprisingly his first in this WC
- In Ind-Pak matches in WCs, this was Sachin’s 3rd fifty and 3rd MoM – 1992,2003 and now 2011. He has played all five encounters and to repeat the known fact India have won all 5
- This is the first time in 3 semis in sub-continent that India have won and reached WC finals
- Wahab Riaz’s 46/5 is his first 5-wicket haul in ODIs and first by Pak bowler in WCs against India
- For the first time this WC, India have bowled only five bowlers – each of them took a neat 2-wickets each
- All six catches in Indian innings were different players – all in all it was a complete TEAM EFFORT
- India is only the second host team to qualify for finals of WC (Eng was the earlier team in 1979, SL played finals in Lahore in 1996 and hence not counted)
- Pakistan had only once chased 260+ (264 against NZ in 1992) in WCs before and hence was no surprise they lost
- Only the third match out of 14 that India won when Yuvraj got out for a duck and first of his golden duck
- 12th time that India had defended 260 or below in WCs
Pre-match Stats:

Stats from 2nd quater-final WC match between India and Australia played at Ahmedabad – Mar 23, 2011
Scores: Australia 260/6 in 50 overs, India 261/5 in 47.4 overs; India won by 5 wickets
- Ricky Ponting got to his 30th ODI ton and 5th in WC – both 2nd highest after Sachin (48 and 6 respectively)
- Brad Haddin got to his 15th ODI fifty, Sachin his 94th, Gambhir his 24th and Yuvraj his 49th
- Yuvraj Singh completed his 8000 ODI runs, 23rd player to do so and 5th Indian to do so after Sachin, Ganguly, Dravid and Azhar
- He is now 13th player to get 25+ MoM awards in ODIs
- Sachin Tendulkar completed his 18,000 ODI runs, at the very ground where Sunil Gavaskar crossed 10000 test runs and Kapil Dev broke record for most test wickets
- He is tournament’s leading run scorer now with 379 runs
- Except for Ricky Ponting’s solo effort, this match had many players contributing equally, 3 fifties in Indian innings, 3 bowlers 2 wicket each in India’s bowling and a wicket each for 4 of Australian bowlers. Ponting must have realised how Sachin would have felt on countless past solo efforts
- 3rd time that 3 India batsmen hit 50+ in same match this WC – against Eng, SA and Aus. All three were big matches and all three went down the wire
- Zaheer Khan joined the sparse list of 26 players to have taken 3 catches in an innings (as non-wicketkeeper) in WCs
- Australia came as favorites in WC, thanks to their #1 ICC ranking. They won only one match against a test playing nation – NZ and lost to India and Pakistan. Even in warm-up they lost to India and South Africa
- This is the first time India have won a match chasing against Aus in WCs in 7 attempts. The record now stands 3 wins and 7 losses against Aus in WC
- 3rd semis in as many WCs in sub-continent for India
- Yuvraj joins Lance Klusener in 1999, Aravinda de Silva in 1996 for 4 MoM awards in single WC edition
Pre-match Stats:
- India’s record at Motera is not inspiring – 5 wins among 12 result oriented matches, including defeat in all of last 4 matches
- In contrast, Aus have won 3 outta 4 matches including 1 win and 1 defeat against India in mid 80s
- In WCs, Aus have formidable 7-2 win-loss record against India, the last loss coming way back in 1987 WC in India
- Considering matches in India too, India are down with 17 wins and 23 losses
- Only Sachin and Sehwag from current team have 50s against Aus in WCs and Ajay Jadeja is the lone Indian to hit 100 against Aus in WC
- India will hope Sachin fires tomorrow who has great record against Aus in India with over 1500 runs @ 50+ avg in 29 matches including 4 tons and 8 fifties. He needs 45 to get past 18000 ODI runs and another ton for 100th international ton. Whenever a milestone appears, he tends to takes long time, but when he does reach it, he gets it with a bang and many of them have come against Aus like 10000 ODI runs, going past Lara in tests to name a few
- Yuvraj, Sehwag and Gambhir have below 30 avg against Aus in India
- Sreesanth has best bowling average and best SR against Aus in India – qual: min 10 wickets, but worst econ
- Only Sachin and Murali Karthik have taken 5-fors against Aus in India
